We live in a throw-away society – buy it, use it, throw it! Far too many things get thrown away unnecessarily. That can change with a Repair Café.

Repair Cafés are free ‘community-centred workshops’ for people to bring items in need of repair so they can work together with volunteer Fixers to repair and maintain the broken or faulty item. In addition to repair, Repair Cafés provide a place to meet and provide assistance with changes to items, for example clothing to improve fit and/or appearance. Setting up a Repair Café contributes to a sustainable, thriving community. A community where repair expertise is valued and passed on, where raw materials are used in a responsible way and where people can meet and get to know one another.

The Bracknell Repair Café (BRC) is planning to open in October 2026 and will operate at St. Andrew’s church on the first Saturday of every month. We are looking to recruit new volunteers who have practical skills in areas such as electrical, textiles, mechanical, woodwork, IT, and household object repairs. There are also opportunities for volunteers who would like to help greet visitors, assist with event setup, administration and promotion.

Many household products can be repaired successfully using the experience and collective know-how within a community of volunteers. The great news is that by repairing we save money, resources, reduce our CO2 emissions and have a lot of fun and gain satisfaction along the way. One of the most exciting aspects is not quite knowing what sort of item will turn up for a repair on a Saturday morning, then meeting the owner and sometimes hearing some fascinating stories about the item’s history and use!

No formal qualifications are needed, just enthusiasm, patience, and a willingness to help others. Volunteering is a great way to share skills, meet local people, learn something new, and support sustainability in the Bracknell community.
